Further to the much appreciated support of President Bashar Al Assad to the tourism sector, a Presidential decree No. 65 dated 20/11/2002 was issued for the establishment of Tourism Chambers in the Syrian Arab Republic.
The decree included the operation procedures and aims of those Chambers, which could be summed as follows:
1- The servicing and support of the tourism sector and representing the sector infront of others.
2- The support and development of tourism, and the planning for and execution of tourism plans in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism.
3- The development of investments in this sector.
4- The contribution to the improvement of service standards of tourism facilities and presenting those services with compatible rates.
5- Expressing the Chambers' opinion in decrees and laws concerning tourism and presenting the Chamber' suggestions through the Union of Tourism Chambers.
6- Elevating the standards of work and services.
7- Spreading tourism awareness.
8- The promotion and marketing of tourism in cooperation with the Union and the Ministry.
9- The contribution to the studies and researches and statistics needed for the development of tourism and presenting all related information to the Ministry.
10- Holding of conferences and training seminars, and issuing of tourism advertisement bulletins and inviting Arab and foreign tourist groups and holding festivals and exhibitions in and outside Syria with the cooperation with the Ministry.
11- The involvement in training of the new companies and individuals working in the sector of tourism.
12- The contribution to the settlement of differences which might arise among members of the Chamber themselves or among members of the Chambers and others, and establishing the required standards which prevents conflict of interests in addition to the contribution of regulating tourism activities.
13- The contribution to the solution and settlement of legal matters in the tourism sector both of national and international nature.
14- Providing social and medical insurance to the members of the Chamber.
The first committee of the Chamber of Tourism for northern Syria was established upon the decision No 2510 of H.E. The Minister of tourism dated 12/12/2004
